Yes it is a little weird to have Christmas in the heat, but to be honest it isn't that hot here. Don't forget to look at a map and check out how far south I am. For Christmas we traveled to Comodoro on the last bus. We arrived at the terminal at 9 and everyone had stopped working. There wasn't a bus or a taxi to take us to the pension where we were going to sleep. After making a few calls I honestly thought we would be sleeping in the terminal. But then a taxi came. We planned on just going to bed, but then the bishop in the area found out and his wife came over and dragged us over to their house. I didn't want to go because I was afraid of being a burden, but it turned out that they sincerely wanted us over. I'm so glad that we went. We had a very traditional Argentina Christmas, so I'm very pleased. We had Cena Fria, which is what it sounds like...cold dinner. Cold meat and everything (my dad would love it). It was sooo good! Then they pulled out the dulce mesa, which was like an American wedding worth of sweets. At midnight we clanged cups and then they lit off fireworks...That' when Hermana Robins left and Hannah came out. I ran outside and climbed on the roof. Of course my companions followed and we all commented on how it was like the 4th of July, but better because they don't have laws on fireworks. THe problem came when we had to get off the roof. It was windy and I had troubles so my dress blew up showing everything multiple times. The poor bishop and his son looked like they were going to die. They finally made one of the other hermanas hold the ladders. I was still in Hannah mode so of course I thought it was the funniest thing ever. The wife laughed for close to half an hour. I wasn't embarrassed until I found out that we are going back to their house for New Years Eve.
Christmas morning my companion made pancakes and then we did a gift exchange at a zone activity. I gave to Elder Carter, a senior missionary. I bought him a cactus and made the cactus a santa hat, and then gave him a tie just in case. I was super nervous but it turned out that my gift rocked!! So there. Christmas turned out to be...completely different and I loved it.
They say that if you put water on your head like this it takes the heat out of you head and the bubbles are evidence. My companions are North Americans that don't believe it.
Dionicia with pan dulce, the Christmas traditional food. Like fruit cake, but good, but I can't eat one more bite.
